Kodai Lake

The lake derives its name as it is located at the heart of Kodaikanal. This star shaped lake is spread across 60 acres, and is surrounded by thick green Palani Hill Range. Kodai Lake is an artificial lake that is created by Sir Vere Henry Levinge using his own money, a former District Collector of Madurai, who moved to Kodaikanal after his retirement. The lake is built by constructing a strong bund to retain the water from various streams flowing down from the surrounding hills.

The lake is spread about 60 acres, and is skirted by well-maintained tar road. The 5 km walk on the road around the Kodai Lake is very soothing and refreshing. Every step presents the lake with a different but natural backdrop. At few places, the road gets enough shade from the surrounding trees, and you can take rest under the shade if you are tired of walking around.  If you are too lazy to walk, but still want to enjoy the natural surroundings around the lake, you have an option to hire a cycle and pedal around. You also have an option of taking a ride on pony/horse.

If you are interested in boating on the lake, there is also a boat house where you can hire row or pedal boats. You can even hire luxury boats for premium price. There are several hotels that provide their guests their own private boats. There are several shops along the road (specially near the boat house) that provide several options for shopping, having street food and so on.
