Thekkady is gateway to Periyar National Park. Periyar National Park is spread across over 700 sq km, and is covered with thick forests. Periyar also has an artificial lake that is formed due to Mullaperiyar Dam. The forest department provides various activities for wildlife enthusiasts. The most famous activity of them all is a River Safari where you will be seated on a boat, and will look out for wild animals that will come to the water to quench its thirst. It is very common to spot elephants during this safari!
