Soochippara Falls, Wayanad

Soochippara Falls is one of the most popular waterfalls in Wayanad, where water plunges through the forested Western Ghats before collecting in a large pool below. The waterfall drops in multiple tiers for roughly 200 metres (around 650 feet) and is surrounded by thick evergreen forests and rocky hills.

Soochippara Falls is also known as Sentinel Rock Waterfalls, after the distinctive rocky formations around the waterfall.

What makes a visit interesting, though, is not just the waterfall itself. There is a fairly long walk from the entrance to the falls, and the anticipation builds as you descend through the forest and gradually hear the sound of the water getting louder.

Soochippara Waterfalls, Wayanad

Why is it called Soochippara?

The name Soochippara is generally explained using the Malayalam words soochi, meaning needle, and para, meaning rock.

The name refers to the needle-like rocky formations that were once prominent around the waterfall. These rocks have been weathered over time, and the formations may not look as distinctly needle-shaped today as they once did.

The waterfall’s other popular name, Sentinel Rock Waterfalls, also comes from the rocky landscape surrounding it.

The Journey to Soochippara Falls

Soochippara Falls is located near Meppadi in Wayanad. The drive from Meppadi towards the falls is itself quite scenic, passing through tea plantations, spice-growing areas and the green hills characteristic of this part of Wayanad.

The waterfall is roughly 25 km from Kalpetta and around 13 km from Meppadi, although the exact distance depends on the route and starting point.

Once you reach the entrance, the real walk to the waterfall begins.

The Walk to the Waterfall

From the entrance, the waterfall is reached by walking through the forest.

The route is roughly 1 to 1.5 km, with the initial portion being a relatively gentle descent. The path becomes considerably steeper towards the waterfall, and the final section requires a little more effort.

Walkway to Soochippara Falls

There is a viewpoint before the steep descent where you can look out over the surrounding forest and hills. One of the interesting things about this viewpoint is that you can hear the waterfall before you can properly see it.

As you continue downhill, the sound gradually becomes louder. The dense vegetation continues to hide the waterfall for quite some time, which makes the eventual first glimpse all the more satisfying.

When you are finally close to the falls, the trees open up and the waterfall suddenly appears in front of you.

Long walk to Soochippara Falls

Soochippara Falls

The waterfall drops dramatically down the rocky hillside before reaching the pool below. The surrounding forest and high rocky slopes give the falls a spectacular setting.

A large pool forms at the base of the waterfall, and historically visitors have been able to get into the water and spend time around the pool. However, water conditions and access restrictions can change, particularly during the monsoon or after heavy rainfall, so visitors should follow the instructions in force when they visit.

Even if you don’t enter the water, there are plenty of rocks around the area where you can sit and enjoy the waterfall.

On a busy day, however, the atmosphere can be quite different from the peaceful forest setting you might expect. The base can become crowded and noisy, particularly on weekends and holidays.

My Experience at Soochippara Falls

The walk to Soochippara Falls was one of the things I enjoyed most about the visit.

The waterfall is hidden from view for much of the descent. At the viewpoint, you can already hear the water crashing somewhere below, but the trees prevent you from getting a proper look at it. As you continue down the steep path, the sound keeps getting louder and you start wondering when the waterfall will finally appear.

The first proper glimpse comes quite close to the bottom, and it is quite spectacular.

Once you reach the base, the waterfall looks completely different from what you could see from above. The large pool, the rocks, the surrounding forest and the massive drop all come together to make Soochippara a memorable waterfall.

The only downside is that the place can become very crowded and noisy on busy days. If you are looking for solitude, a crowded weekend may not give you the experience you are hoping for.

There is a designated parking area near the entrance. On busy weekends and holidays, however, the parking area can fill up quickly and vehicles may end up parked along the approach road.

From the entrance, you have to walk to the waterfall.

Best Time to Visit Soochippara Falls

Soochippara can be visited throughout the year, but the character of the waterfall changes considerably with the season.

During the rainy months, the waterfall is at its most powerful and the surrounding forest is lush and green. However, the paths can become slippery and access to the water may be restricted depending on conditions.

During the cooler months, the weather is more comfortable for the walk and the surrounding landscape remains green.

During the hotter months, the flow of water may be lower, but the weather can make the walk more tiring. Starting early in the day is preferable.

Tips for Visiting Soochippara Falls

  • Wear comfortable footwear with a good grip, particularly because the final descent can be steep.
  • Carry drinking water, especially if you are visiting during the warmer months.
  • Allow enough time for the walk to the falls and back rather than treating Soochippara as a quick stop.
  • If you want to enjoy the waterfall without the biggest crowds, avoid weekends and long holidays where possible.
  • Do not enter the water unless it is permitted and conditions are safe. The appearance of a calm pool can be deceptive, particularly after heavy rain.
  • Follow the instructions of the local authorities and staff regarding access to the waterfall.
