Unchalli Falls – The Hidden Giant of the Western Ghats
Deep within the forests of Uttara Kannada lies one of Karnataka’s most spectacular yet lesser-known waterfalls — Unchalli Falls.
Formed by the Aghanashini River, the waterfall plunges nearly 380 feet into a deep gorge surrounded by dense forests of the Western Ghats. Unlike many waterfalls that maintain a uniform shape, Unchalli Falls begins as a narrow stream before dramatically widening as it cascades down the cliff face, creating its distinctive triangular appearance.
Its combination of height, wilderness, and relatively low visitor numbers makes Unchalli Falls one of the most rewarding destinations for nature lovers visiting North Karnataka.
Why Visit Unchalli Falls?
Unchalli Falls is ideal for travelers who enjoy:
- Scenic waterfall viewpoints
- Forest treks
- Nature photography
- Offbeat destinations
- Birdwatching
- Exploring the Western Ghats
Unlike many popular waterfalls that become crowded during peak season, Unchalli Falls still retains a sense of solitude and wilderness.
The Story Behind the Names
While most travelers know it as Unchalli Falls, the waterfall is known by several names.
Keppa Joga
In Kannada, Keppa means “deaf.” The thunderous sound created by the waterfall can be heard from a considerable distance, earning it the nickname Keppa Joga or “the deafening Jog Falls.”
Lushington Falls
The waterfall was also known as Lushington Falls after J. D. Lushington, a British district collector who is credited with bringing the waterfall to wider attention during the 1840s.
How to Reach Unchalli Falls
The waterfall is located approximately 35 km from Sirsi.
The most convenient way to visit is by private vehicle or taxi. The route passes through beautiful forested landscapes and small villages, making the journey enjoyable in itself.
The final stretch leads to a parking area near the waterfall.
Trek to the Viewpoints
One of the highlights of visiting Unchalli Falls is the short downhill trek from the parking area.
The trail descends through the forest for roughly 500 meters before reaching the first viewpoint.
First Viewpoint
The first viewpoint offers a spectacular panorama of the waterfall and surrounding valley.
From here, visitors can witness the Aghanashini River squeezing through a narrow rocky channel before plunging into the gorge below.
The sound of rushing water is often as memorable as the view itself.
If you pause for a moment, you can sometimes distinguish between the sound of the river flowing through the narrow channel above and the roar of the waterfall below.
Second Viewpoint
A short walk further down leads to a second viewpoint.
This viewpoint often provides a clearer and more direct view of the waterfall, particularly during misty or cloudy weather when visibility from the upper viewpoint may be limited.
For photographers, the second viewpoint is often considered the best place to capture the full scale of Unchalli Falls.
What Makes Unchalli Falls Unique?
Several features distinguish Unchalli Falls from other waterfalls in Karnataka:
Distinctive Shape
The waterfall’s triangular profile creates a dramatic visual effect that changes with the volume of water.
Dense Forest Surroundings
The falls remain largely hidden within thick Western Ghats forests, giving visitors a sense of discovery.
Powerful Sound
The roar of the waterfall echoes through the valley and is one of the reasons behind its nickname, Keppa Joga.
Relatively Less Crowded
Compared to many famous waterfalls in Karnataka, Unchalli Falls often feels peaceful and uncrowded, especially on weekdays.
