Nestled deep within the forests of Uttara Kannada, Sathodi Falls is one of Karnataka’s most beautiful hidden waterfalls.

Though only about 15 meters high, the waterfall makes up for its modest height with its stunning setting. Surrounded by dense evergreen forests, Sathodi Falls is formed when several unnamed streams merge upstream before plunging into a rocky pool below.

The result is a broad, rectangular curtain of water that is especially impressive during and after the monsoon season.

For travelers exploring Yellapur and the Western Ghats, Sathodi Falls is one of the most rewarding nature escapes in the region.

Why Visit Sathodi Falls?

Sathodi Falls is known for:

Unlike many waterfalls that can only be viewed from a distance, Sathodi Falls allows visitors to experience the waterfall up close.

The Walk to Sathodi Falls

The waterfall is located approximately 30 km from Yellapur.

The final stretch involves a pleasant walk from the parking area.

The trail is mostly flat and easy, making it suitable for families and casual travelers.

One of the most enjoyable parts of the walk is the changing scenery. In some sections, the path runs between water channels and agricultural fields, while dense forests gradually begin to surround you as you approach the waterfall.

The anticipation builds with every step until the sound of rushing water announces your arrival.

Experiencing the Waterfall

As the forest suddenly opens up, Sathodi Falls comes into view.

The waterfall descends almost vertically on one side while a small rocky ledge partially interrupts the flow on the other, creating its distinctive appearance.

For most of the year, visitors can walk close to the base of the waterfall and enjoy the cool spray rising from the plunge pool below.

During the monsoon, however, the waterfall transforms dramatically. Water volume increases significantly, rocks become slippery, and access to the base may become difficult.

Even if you do not venture close to the water, simply sitting on a rock and listening to the roar of the falls amidst the forest is an experience in itself.

Best Time to Visit Sathodi Falls

Post-Monsoon (September to December)

This is the best time to visit.

The waterfall carries abundant water, the forests are lush green, and access is usually easier than during peak monsoon.

Monsoon (June to August)

The waterfall is at its most powerful and photogenic.

However, trails can become muddy and slippery.

Winter (December to February)

Pleasant weather makes winter ideal for sightseeing and photography.

Places to Visit Near Sathodi Falls

One of the advantages of visiting Sathodi Falls is that several attractions can be combined into a single day trip.

Kodasalli Dam Backwaters

A short distance from Sathodi Falls lies the scenic backwaters of Kodasalli Dam.

The dam is built across the Kali River and creates a vast reservoir surrounded by dense forests.

One of the most striking sights here is the collection of dead tree trunks rising from the water. These partially submerged trees create a surreal landscape that photographers particularly enjoy.

On a cool morning or evening, the backwaters offer a peaceful setting to simply sit, relax, and admire the surrounding wilderness.

A Personal Memory

One of my favorite moments from this area was sitting beside the backwaters with a cup of hot tea while looking out at the still water, the drowned tree trunks, and the forest-covered hills beyond. It is one of those simple travel moments that stays with you long after the trip ends.

Shivapura Hanging Bridge

Another interesting stop nearby is the Shivapura Hanging Bridge.

Today, visitors cross the backwaters using a suspension bridge. However, things were very different in the past.

Before the bridge was built, local residents used a manually operated rope ferry to cross the water. Passengers had to pull themselves across using ropes connected to a wooden platform.

I was fortunate enough to experience that old crossing before it disappeared.

While it felt like an adventure for visitors, it also highlighted a reality often overlooked by travelers: what seems exciting to us was simply a daily necessity for local communities.

The hanging bridge has now made life considerably easier for residents while becoming an attraction in its own right.

Ganeshgudi

Located near Sathodi Falls, Ganeshgudi is a small settlement surrounded by dense forests and known for its peaceful atmosphere.

The area is popular among birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts and serves as a gateway to several attractions around the Kali River region.

A small temple dedicated to Lord Shiva adds a spiritual element to this otherwise nature-focused destination.
