Jog Falls
A complete travel guide to one of India’s tallest waterfalls
Few waterfalls in India can match the sheer scale and drama of Jog Falls. Formed by the mighty Sharavati River, Jog Falls plunges nearly 250 meters (around 850 feet) into a deep gorge, creating one of the most spectacular sights in the Western Ghats.
Located in Karnataka’s Shivamogga district, Jog Falls is often considered among the tallest and most beautiful waterfalls in India—especially during the monsoon season when the river is in full force.
Why Jog Falls is Special
Unlike many waterfalls that descend as a single stream, Jog Falls is divided into four distinct cascades:
- Raja
- Rani
- Roarer
- Rocket
Each has its own character, making the waterfall look dramatically different depending on the water flow and season.
The Four Cascades of Jog Falls
Raja Falls
The most majestic of all the streams, Raja falls descends vertically in a near-unbroken drop.
The name “Raja” (King) perfectly suits its proud and commanding appearance.
Roarer Falls
Located beside Raja, Roarer crashes through a narrow rocky path, producing the loudest sound among all four cascades.
From a distance, it almost feels as if the water is emerging from the middle of the cliff itself.
Rocket Falls
As the name suggests, Rocket Falls appears like multiple jets of water shooting downward rapidly.
Rani Falls
Gentler and more graceful than the others, Rani Falls quietly flows down the cliff, adding elegance to the otherwise powerful landscape.

Best Viewpoints at Jog Falls
Main Viewpoint
The primary viewpoint offers a panoramic view of all four cascades together.
During peak monsoon, the mist, clouds, and roaring sound of water create an unforgettable atmosphere.
On days with heavy fog, patience is required—the clouds occasionally clear to reveal the full grandeur of the falls.
British Bungalow Side
A lesser-explored road near the old British Bungalow offers views from the top section of the falls.
From here, you can witness the river just before it plunges into the gorge.

⚠️ Be extremely careful near the rocks, especially during monsoon, as surfaces become dangerously slippery.

Trek Down to the Base of Jog Falls
One of the highlights of visiting Jog Falls is descending the staircase leading to the bottom of the gorge.
The tourism department has constructed around 1400 steps that take visitors close to the base of the waterfall.
What to Expect
- Incredible close-up views
- Water spray and mist all around
- A physically demanding climb back up
During summer or lower water flow periods, visitors can get much closer to the waterfall.
During peak monsoon, however:
- Access may be restricted
- Heavy water flow prevents reaching the exact touchdown point

Jog Falls During Different Seasons
Monsoon (July to September) – Best Time
This is when Jog Falls is at its absolute best.
If rainfall is strong and water release from the dam is high:
- The four cascades merge into one giant curtain of water
- Mist fills the valley
- The surrounding forests turn lush green
This is also the most crowded period.

Winter (October to February)
A great balance between:
- Medium water flow
- Pleasant weather
- Lower crowd compared to peak monsoon weekends
Summer (March to May)
Water flow reduces significantly, but adventure lovers sometimes explore the rocky upper sections of the falls during this time.

The famous Kannada movie Mungaru Male featured scenes shot around Jog Falls, making some trekking trails popular among visitors.
Linganamakki Dam and Chain Gate
The flow of water at Jog Falls is controlled by the nearby Linganamakki Dam, located around 15 km away.

Though entry into the dam is restricted, the surrounding landscape itself is beautiful.

A nearby location called Chain Gate offers a closer look at the water channels flowing from the dam.
The interior roads connecting Chain Gate and Jog Falls become especially scenic during monsoon, with dense greenery covering the villages and hills.
