Heroor Hanging Bridge
✨
Perhaps this is the most serene amd picturesque hanging bridge I have seen so far. And the water below is so clear, you can see the bottom of the river. Do you see that in the 2nd pic?
✨
Did you know that Karnataka has over 150 hanging bridges like these? It was a cost effective way to connect the villages thereby reducing the commute time drastically. The engineer who built these bridges all over Karnataka, Girish Bharadwaaj, was honoured with Padma Shri for his amazing work connecting various villages.

Built in the Gothic architecture by the French missionaries in the 1860s, the church was abandoned after two dams were built close by which started flooding the church during monsoon.

Basavanna was a philosopher and poet during the Kalyani Chalukya and Kalachuri dynasty’s rule in Northern Karnataka during 12th Century! He used to spread a lot of social awareness including gender and social discrimination, superstitions and rituals through his poetry locally called as ‘Vachana’.

Lakshmeshwara is a small village in North Karnataka that has a temple complex built by the Chalukyans. The complex has one main temple which has some of the finest carvings, and is surrounded by several small temples.
✨
The temple’s hall, outer wall and the entrance arch has beautiful stone carvings. One of the interesting carvings is in the third pic. Locals say that it is believed when the snake touches the circle, the world will cease to exist. While few locals say that the snake has moved few centimetres since their childhood, others say it has not moved at all!
✨
Though the temple has the history from 6th Century, its maintenance was ignored by the rulers and the governments, and it was getting ruined bu the year. The temple in its current form was restored by Infosys Foundation by working with the locals. The restoration work was also done very carefully, not to deviate much from its original build.

The story is of Afzal Khan who was the army chief of Adil Shah. When Adil Shah’s kingdom@was preparing for the war with Chatrapati Shivaji, one of the astrologer predicted that this was going to be the last war of Afzal Khan! Devastated by the news, he decided to kill all his 63 wives by drowning them in the well (first pic) so that they cannot remarry!! He also built the grave for all of them (second pic).

One of his wives escaped the brutal killings, but she was eventually caught by his army at a different place. She was also killed, and her grave is at a different location!
